Herculiner

Well I finally got around to putting some of the finishing touches on the interior. I found Herculiner on sale at Sam's Club for $79 (normal price). It came in a kit form, which I found to be outstanding, it has just about everything you will need, included in the kit was: 1 gallon of herculiner, 1 quart of herculiner, 1 pair of gloves, 1 Phillips screwdriver, (1) 2" paint brush, 1 roller with 3 rolling sponges, 1 can opener, 1 roll of 2" blue masking tape, 1 scratch pad, 1 lint free cloth, and the directions.

What you will need to purchase: some Acetone and a paint tray.

For prep work I first took everything out of the jeep and I mean everything from out of that tub (including all the plastic doo dads), then swept out the large crap and busted out the garden hose and dish soap. I scrubbed the inside of the tub with a green scratch pad and dish soap. After a good rinsing and letting it dry I got out my little electric sander and quickly went over as much as I could with it. Rinse!! Then I used a electric grinder with a wire wheel attachment to bust the rusted areas (thank god I didn't have many). Rinse!

Now to treat the rust, I used some Dupli-color Rust Fix (Many companies make something similar to this), what this spray stuff does is supposedly bonds with the rust and turns into a black primer.

Then I wiped the entire surface down with the cloth provided using the Acetone.

One word of advice, after having this on my tub for several years, it has held up quite well, considering what I put it through.  I carry like a 90 pound tool box and other crap that rattles, moves, and thrown around back there, and it has held up quite well with only a few gouges through to the tub.  During your prep, I would scratch up the surface A LOT, let me say this again, A LOT.  I would use like 40 grit sand paper over everything.  This goes on quite thick and will cover up those gouges, but you want them there for good adhesive.  I think mine would of held up better if I had done this, but I am still happy with it, can't beat the price.

At this time I did some painting of the sides of the interior of the tub.

Now for the taping off of everything you don't want this herculiner on. I taped off all the edges and then all the holes, for the holes I just used some 1/2" masking tape (since the holes are mostly covered up by whatever gets bolted to them).

For the application of the Herculiner, the biggest pain in the ass was getting the gallon open, but once open I used an old screwdriver to stir it with (make sure you do it good to mix up the particles). Then poured it into the paint tray. You'll first want to use the brush and do all the corners and edges, wherever you will not be able to get the roller brush into. Once done with that just use the roller brush to do the remaining areas.

This is the first coat, allow it to dry 1 to 4 hours, I let mine set up for about 2 hours.

Now you just repeat the application for the second coat. (you might want to take the tape off after a few hours of it setting up, I left mine on over night and had to use a razor blade to get the tape off) It wasn't bad, just time consuming.

Let it sit up for at least 12 hours then you can put everything back in the jeep. Before putting my stuff back in I used a tap & die set and tapped out all the holes then sprayed the holes with the Dupli-Color Rust Fix. I also used all new grade 8 bolts or stainless steel for the non-vital bolts. Whalla.. done!

For my application I ended up using about 3/4 of a gallon and I did apply it rather thick the second time around. I think it turned out great and I still have a quart left for touch ups.
